I thought she was good in The Wilds, but that’s my only experience with her roles. I am not rooting for or against Berry here. In truth, Joel, Tommy, Sara, all these characters look pretty different from their game versions, not just Ellie. It’s more about being able to channel the spirit of that character than anything, and I think that opens up the field much wider than just Berry, even if she’s a dead ringer for game Abby. Not to say with training any actress cast, including Berry, couldn’t get Abby-level jacked, but I think what Ramsey proves is that simply looking like the character isn’t really the main factor of consideration. I think the physicality of Abby is probably the more important part of the character, given that she’s meant to be an imposing figure doing battle with Ellie.
And as such, I have to wonder how much it actually matters as to whether or not the actress who ultimately plays Abby…looks like Abby. Troy won numerous awards and nominations for his incredible vocal performances and currently holds the record for the most acting nominations at the BAFTA Games Awards.Clearly that has worked out just fine! Ramsey is incredible as Ellie, perhaps with a bit more of an edge than the game version, but it truly does not matter in the least that they look different. Troy’s incredible range and vocal capabilities have landed him roles such as Batman/Bruce Wayne in “Batman: The Telltale Series” and “Batman: The Enemy Within”, Samuel Drake in “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End”, and Booker DeWitt in “BioShock Infinite”, to name but a few.
No one could bring Joel to life quite like Troy Baker, the voice behind this mysterious, broody character and one of gaming’s most prolific voice actors, as well as being one of The Last of Us voice actors. His life is thrown into turmoil when he meets Ellie, who reminds him of his daughter. Twenty-odd years later, Joel is a black market smuggler in the Boston quarantine zone doing whatever it takes to make ends meet. While attempting to flee his home with his 12-year-old Sarah, they got into a confrontation with a soldier who ended up killing the girl. Born and raised in Texas, he became a single father in his early 20s, just at the start of the outbreak. Joel is a bitter survivor of the initial infection outburst.
